In short
- A mangrove trim limit calculator checks three numbers against Florida DEP's homeowner exemption: 10 ft tall at most, a fringe that reaches 50 ft or less toward the water, and never trimmed below 6 ft.
- Inside all three, an owner may trim without a permit. Taller than 10 ft: hire a professional mangrove trimmer. Outside the fringe, or cut below 6 ft: a permit is needed.
- Removal is not covered by the exemptions. Trees growing into a seawall or dock have their own provision: contact DEP first.
- A 12 ft fringe trimmed to 8 ft needs a professional trimmer; a 9 ft fringe cut to 7 ft does not.
On this page
This mangrove trim limit calculator is for Cape Coral saltwater canal owners who want a quick yes or no before anyone picks up a saw near the seawall. It applies the limits from Florida DEP’s mangrove FAQ that our mangrove trimming rules guide lists, and uses no prices. It is general information, not legal advice.

How the check works
- Pick the situation.
Trimming a shoreline fringe, trimming trees back from the shore, removal, or trees growing into the wall or a dock each follow a different DEP line.
- Removal and wall or dock contact come first.
Removal is not covered by the trimming exemptions. Trees growing into a seawall or over a dock have their own provision, with a call to DEP first.
- Reach.
If the mangroves extend more than 50 ft toward the water, or stand back from the shore, they are not a shoreline fringe and DEP guidance calls for a permit and a professional trimmer.
- Cut height.
Trimming below 6 ft, or defoliating, is outside the exemption and calls for an individual permit; mitigation may be required.
- Tree height.
Over 10 ft, the owner needs a professional mangrove trimmer, though the work may still be exempt.
What each result means
| Result | What DEP guidance says | Who acts |
|---|---|---|
| Owner may trim | Exempt if not below 6 ft and no defoliation | Owner |
| Professional trimmer | Over 10 ft: may still be exempt | Trimmer |
| Permit needed | Not in a fringe, or over 50 ft out | DEP, trimmer |
| Individual permit | Cutting below 6 ft; mitigation possible | DEP first |
| Removal | Not covered by the exemptions | DEP first |

Before anyone cuts
Get DEP’s answer in writing. Rules change, and local governments can run parts of the program. Our mangrove trimming guide explains each case, and our seawall permit guide covers the in-water conditions that can affect a schedule.
If mangroves are pushing on the cap, see our seawall maintenance guide, and read how the rest of the yard is affected in landscaping near a seawall.
Questions to ask your contractor
- Is mangrove trimming in the price, or excluded? Compare the bids line by line.
- Who hires the professional trimmer? Get the name in writing.
- Have you contacted DEP about trees touching my wall? Ask to see the reply.
- Who pays if a state permit or mitigation is needed? Settle it before you sign.

This tool checks limits, not the job. We are a referral service, not a contractor; we connect visitors with independent local providers. Use the form below to ask independent local contractors for a written quote, and read how to choose a seawall contractor first.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trim mangroves behind my Cape Coral seawall myself?
Florida DEP lets a homeowner trim without a permit when the mangroves are in a shoreline fringe that does not extend more than 50 feet toward the water, are no more than 10 feet tall, and are not trimmed below 6 feet or defoliated. Taller trees call for a professional mangrove trimmer. This tool applies those limits to your numbers; confirm with DEP before cutting.
How do I measure mangrove height?
DEP measures height from the substrate, where the trunk meets the ground, even when that point is underwater. Estimate to the top of the tallest tree you plan to trim, and round up if you are unsure.
What if the mangroves are growing into my seawall or dock?
DEP's FAQ says mangroves growing into a seawall may be altered as part of seawall maintenance or repair, and branches over a dock that block access may be trimmed. It asks you to send your district office a description and photos before starting. Choose that option in the calculator for the reminder.
Does this calculator cover removing a mangrove?
It only tells you that removal is not covered by the trimming exemptions. DEP says removal may need an individual permit and mitigation, so apply or ask before any tree comes out.
When is the best time to trim mangroves?
DEP says trimming between October and March is most desirable because growth is lowest. That overlaps with many seawall schedules, so ask your contractor to coordinate.
