In short
- A dock construction code calculator compares the numbers on your dock plan with the City of Cape Coral construction standards in Land Development Code section 5.4.10.
- It checks piling height (10 ft above the cap), deck height (2 ft, or 4 ft near the river), piling spacing, deck gaps, piling depth, piling diameter and drain offset.
- Enter only what you know. Anything left blank is skipped, and each row shows how far over or short you are.
- A piling that tops out 11 ft above the cap is 1 ft over; a deck 1.5 ft above the cap is fine on a canal.
On this page
This dock construction code calculator is for Cape Coral canal owners who have a dock drawing or a quote and want to know whether its numbers fit the city code before the permit goes in. Pick the water type, enter the heights above the seawall cap, and add the spacing and piling details you have. No prices are involved. How far a dock may reach into the canal is a different rule, covered by our dock projection calculator. This is general information, not engineering advice.

| Check (code limit) | Yours | Result |
|---|
Example: a canal dock with pilings 11 ft above the cap and decking 1.5 ft above it. Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
How the check works
- Pick the water.
Docks on the Caloosahatchee River, and on canals within 300 ft of its platted shoreline, may have higher decking and a wider deck gap.
- Enter the two heights.
Measure from the top of the seawall cap to the top of the pilings and to the walking surface.
- Add what you know.
Spacing, deck gaps and piling details come from the plan or the quote. Blank rows are skipped.
- Read each row.
Each row shows the code limit in its label and says ok, or how far over or short you are.
- Take the over rows to your builder.
Ask whether the drawing changes or the number was a typo before the permit is filed.

What the numbers do not cover
Passing every row does not make a dock code-compliant. The code has many more items, including the projection limit, side setbacks, fasteners, boat lift certification and the open-water rule. Lifts, wiring and the final survey are separate approvals. See the dock and boat lift permit checklist, and size the pilings with the dock piling calculator.
Heights also matter for tides: a deck set at the 2 ft limit can still flood in a surge, which our dock tide clearance calculator and the seawall maintenance guide help you think through. If you are replacing the wall, ask the crew how the dock tie-ins will be handled.
Questions to ask your dock builder
- Who is certifying the lift? The code requires every manufactured or modified boat lift to be certified by a Florida registered professional engineer, with the capacity label on the lift near the controls.
- What are the fasteners and wood treatment? Fasteners must be stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized, and wood in contact with water must carry the treatment level in section 5.4.10.F. Ask for it in writing.
- Is there a ladder on the plan? A dock from a seawall parcel needs a ladder into the water, not made of wood, that reaches 3 ft below low tide or the bottom.
- Where do the amber reflectors go? At least 4 sq in of amber reflective material goes on the outside end pilings of docks that project into the waterway.
Next step: get a written quote
This tool checks numbers, not the job. We are a referral service, not a contractor; we connect visitors with independent local providers. Use the form below to ask independent local seawall contractors for a written quote, and read how to choose a seawall contractor first.

Frequently asked questions
How high can dock pilings be in Cape Coral?
Land Development Code section 5.4.10.G says the elevation of pilings may not exceed 10 ft above the seawall cap. If there is no seawall, the limit is 13 ft above mean water level. A separate rule caps freestanding mooring piles at 8 ft above mean high water (section 5.4.5.C).
How high can a dock deck be above the seawall cap?
Section 5.4.10.H limits the decking to 2 ft above the seawall cap on canals. For docks in the Caloosahatchee River, and for docks in canals within 300 ft of the platted shoreline of the river, the limit is 4 ft above the cap. With no seawall the limits are 5 ft and 7 ft above mean water level.
How far apart can dock pilings be?
When a single stringer of 2 by 8 inches or smaller is used, section 5.4.10.O allows at most 10 ft 8 in (128 in) from the center of one piling to the center of the next. Stringers that carry the decking may be no more than 30 in apart, center to center. Larger or doubled stringers are not covered by this number, so the engineer or dock builder sets the spacing.
How deep do dock pilings have to go?
Section 5.4.10.N says pilings within 6 ft of the seawall face are driven at least 4 ft into the submerged bottom, and pilings farther out at least 6 ft. If they cannot reach that depth, cross-bracing or tie-backs are required. The city text does not tie these numbers to a soil type, so the permit drawings decide.
Is this the same as a dock permit?
No. This is a check of the numbers in the city construction standards, not a permit review. The Building Official decides whether a dock complies, and state and federal approvals are separate. Our dock permit checklist covers the paperwork.
