Dock Ladder Length Calculator: Length and Steps (Cape Coral)

With a deck 3.5 ft above high water, a 1.3 ft tide drop and a bottom rung 3 ft under low water, you need about 7.8 ft of ladder: 8 steps at 12 in, with 2.2 ft to spare above a 5.2 ft bottom.

In short

  • A dock ladder length calculator adds three things: the drop from the deck to high water, the tide drop to low water, and how far the bottom rung sits under low water.
  • Cape Coral code asks for a ladder that reaches 3 ft under the surface at low tide or the bottom, whichever is less, and it cannot be wood.
  • The tool then checks the bottom rung against your water depth and counts the steps at the spacing you pick.
  • Tide drop uses NOAA Fort Myers numbers: about 1.3 ft between the highest and lowest daily levels.

This dock ladder length calculator is for Cape Coral canal-front owners who want to know how long a swim ladder must be before they order a dock or a replacement ladder. It uses your own measurements, the Land Development Code ladder rule and NOAA tide levels, with no prices. It supports our dock construction code calculator and the Cape Coral dock and boat lift permit checklist.

1. Heights and depth

Measure straight down from the top of the dock deck to the water at high tide, and the water depth right where the ladder will hang. If you measured the depth at mid-tide, take off about half the tide drop. Depth cannot be read from NOAA; measure it.

2. Tide and bottom rung

Cape Coral asks for at least 3 ft under the surface at low tide, or the bottom if that is less. The smaller choices are only for comparing with ladders elsewhere.

3. Step spacing

About 12 in is a common swim-ladder spacing, not a code number. Use the spacing printed on the ladder maker's sheet.

Example: deck 3.5 ft above high water, 5.2 ft of water at low tide, 1.3 ft tide drop, bottom rung 3 ft under low water, 12 in between steps.

How the length is worked out

  1. Start at the deck.

The ladder begins at the top of the deck. Here that is 3.5 ft above the water at high tide.

  2. Add the tide drop.

At low tide the water is lower by the tide drop: 3.5 + 1.3 = 4.8 ft from deck to low water.

  3. Add the part under water.

The bottom rung goes 3 ft under low water: 4.8 + 3 = 7.8 ft. If the canal is less than 3 ft deep, the ladder only has to reach the bottom.

  4. Check the bottom.

5.2 ft of water minus 3 ft leaves 2.2 ft under the bottom rung. The tool flags less than 0.5 ft.

  5. Count the steps.

7.8 ft is 93.6 in; divided by 12 in and rounded up, that is 8 steps.

Your canal may differ. The tide figures come from a gauge on the river, a few miles away. Some canals follow the tide and some are held at a set level. Measure the deck height and water in your own canal, at a known tide, and let the builder confirm the ladder against the permit drawings. See sea level and tides in Cape Coral.

Tide levels also affect boats and decks: see the dock tide clearance calculator, and if you are sizing a new dock, the dock piling calculator.

Questions to ask your dock builder

  • What tide level were the heights measured at? Ask for it in writing.
  • Is the ladder fixed or extendable? An extendable one must be pullable from the water without tools.
  • What is the ladder made of? Stainless steel, anodized aluminum or a rated polymer; never wood.
  • How far does it reach under low water? It should meet the 3 ft rule, or the bottom if the canal is shallower.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a dock ladder need to be in Cape Coral?

Long enough to reach at least 3 ft under the water surface at low tide, or the bottom of the waterway, whichever is less. That is the rule in section 5.4.10.R of the Cape Coral Land Development Code for docks that project from a parcel with a seawall. Add the height of the deck above the water and the tide drop to get the full ladder length.

What if the canal is shallower than 3 ft at low tide?

The code says the ladder only has to reach the bottom in that case, because it asks for 3 ft or the bottom, whichever is less. The calculator shortens the ladder to the water depth you enter and tells you the bottom rung would sit at or near the bottom.

Does an extendable ladder follow the same rule?

The same reach applies: it must be able to extend to 3 ft under the surface at low tide or to the bottom, whichever is less. The code also says it must be the kind a person in the water can pull down without tools. Fixed ladders use the same depth rule.

How far apart should the steps be?

The Cape Coral code text we checked gives no step spacing. Many swim ladders are sold with about 12 in between steps, so the calculator uses 12 in as a typical rule of thumb and lets you pick 10 or 14 in. Use the spacing on the maker's sheet.

What can a dock ladder be made of?

Not wood. Metal ladders must be stainless steel, anodized aluminum or an equally corrosion-resistant material, and plastic ladders must be a stabilized polymer made to resist sun, heat and water. Ask the builder to write the material on the plan.

How big is the tide drop in a Cape Coral canal?

Small. NOAA's Fort Myers gauge lists a mean range of 0.94 ft and about 1.3 ft between the highest and lowest daily levels. Wind can push water lower, and some canals are held at a set level, so measure your own canal.
