In short
- A dock rail may be at most 42 in above the deck. Posts that carry it can be taller, within the piling-height limit.
- Posts or pilings holding the rail must be at least 30 in apart.
- Pickets must leave at least 4 in of open space between them, and no picket may be bigger than 2 x 6 in (actual size).
- Enter your plan and get a pass or over for each limit, plus the most pickets that fit between two posts.

This dock handrail rules calculator is for Cape Coral owners who are having a dock built or rebuilt and want to check the rail before the drawings are sealed. Enter the rail height, the distance between posts, the open gap between pickets and the picket size, and it compares each number with Land Development Code section 5.4.9. It uses code text only, with no prices. To check the pilings and the deck, use the dock construction code calculator.

| Check (code limit) | Yours | Result |

Example: a rail 44 in high, posts 48 in apart, a 3.5 in gap and 1.5 x 3.5 in pickets. Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
How the check works
- Measure from the deck.
The 42 in is measured from the deck of the structure, not from the seawall cap or the water.
- Enter the post distance.
This is the space between the pilings or posts that hold the rail. The code sets a minimum, so wide spacing is not a code problem on its own.
- Enter the picket gap and size.
Use the open space between neighbouring pickets and the actual size of one picket. Larger and smaller sides are sorted for you.
- Read each row.
Each row shows the limit in its label and says ok, or how far over or short you are.
- Take the over rows to your builder.
Ask whether the drawing is wrong or whether an alternative design is being proposed for the Building Official.
The limits the checker uses
| Item | Limit | Code section |
|---|---|---|
| Handrail height above the deck | 42 in | 5.4.9.A |
| Space between rail posts or pilings | 30 in minimum | 5.4.9.A |
| Open space between pickets | 4 in minimum | 5.4.9.B |
| Picket actual size | 2 x 6 in maximum | 5.4.9.B |
| Pilings and posts may be taller than the rail | up to 10 ft over the cap | 5.4.9.A, 5.4.10.G |

Pickets that fit between two posts
| Post distance (in) | 1.5 in wide | 3.5 in wide | 5.5 in wide |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 5 | 4 | 3 |
| 48 | 8 | 5 | 4 |
| 60 | 10 | 7 | 5 |
| 72 | 12 | 9 | 7 |
Most pickets that keep every gap at 4 in or more, ignoring the width of the posts themselves. Fewer pickets mean wider gaps, which this section does not cap. Your builder's count will differ once the post size is taken out of the span.
What the numbers do not cover
Passing every row does not make a dock rail code-compliant. The Land Development Code lets the Building Official approve alternative handrail designs, and ordinary building-code rules for guards, such as when a rail is required and what opening sizes are allowed, may apply on top of section 5.4.9. Ask your builder and the city which set governs your dock. Heights also tie to the deck limit in the dock construction code calculator, and the permit steps are in the dock and boat lift permit checklist.
Questions to ask your dock builder
- Is a rail on the plan? Ask whether the drawing shows a handrail at all, and how high it is above the deck.
- What is the picket gap? Ask for the open space between pickets in inches, not just the picket spacing.
- What do the posts attach to? Rail posts that are also pilings must follow the piling rules in section 5.4.10.
- Is any part an alternative design? Ask who submits it to the Building Official and how long approval takes.
- How do I choose a builder? See choosing a seawall contractor.
Next step: get a written quote
This tool checks numbers, not the job. We are a referral service, not a contractor; we connect visitors with independent local providers. Use the form below to ask independent local seawall and dock contractors for a written quote, and ask each to list the rail height, post spacing and picket gap in it.

Frequently asked questions
How high can a dock handrail be in Cape Coral?
Land Development Code section 5.4.9.A says decorative handrails may not exceed 42 inches, measured from the deck of the structure. Pilings or posts that hold the rail up may rise higher, up to the piling limit in section 5.4.10.G (10 ft above the seawall cap).
How far apart do dock handrail posts have to be?
Section 5.4.9.A says a minimum of 30 inches must be kept between the pilings or posts used to support handrails. That is a minimum, not a maximum. How the 30 inches is measured (center to center or edge to edge) is something to confirm with the Building Official.
Is there a gap rule for dock handrail pickets?
Section 5.4.9.B says interior members (pickets, balusters and rungs) must be parallel and may not intersect, and that at least four inches of open space must be kept between them. The code states a minimum open space. Ordinary building-code guard rules may also apply, so ask the Building Official how the two fit together.
How big can a handrail picket be?
The same section says the actual dimensions of any handrail member may not exceed two inches by six inches. A 2 by 4 board measures about 1.5 by 3.5 inches, so it fits. The Building Official can approve alternative designs that meet the intent of the section.
Does this check my whole dock?
No. It checks only the handrail numbers in section 5.4.9. Piling height, deck height, projection, setbacks and the permit are separate. The permit reviewer decides, and this is a planning tool, not a permit determination.
