In short
- A dock piling within 6 ft of the seawall is driven 4 ft or more. Farther out, 6 ft. A freestanding mooring post or other freestanding piling, 8 ft.
- Shortest length = driven depth + water depth + height above the water.
- Top of a dock piling: 10 ft above the cap. Mooring piles: 8 ft above mean high water.
- Water over 8 ft deep means cross-bracing at 30 to 45 degrees.

This dock piling length calculator is for Cape Coral owners comparing dock quotes who want to know how long the pilings should be and whether the heights on the drawing fit the city code. Enter the water depth, the distance from the seawall and the planned height, and it adds the code's minimum driven depth to get the shortest piling, then checks the height limits and the cross-bracing rule in Land Development Code sections 5.4.10 and 5.4.5. It uses code text and geometry only, with no prices. For the material of the piling see the dock piling material specs calculator, for the other construction limits the dock construction code calculator, and for how many you need the dock piling count calculator.

Example: a dock piling 12 ft from the seawall, in 7.5 ft of water at mean high water, with its top 9 ft above mean high water and a seawall cap 2.5 ft above mean high water. Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
How the check works
- Pick dock or freestanding.
A dock piling and a freestanding mooring post or piling have different driven depths and height rules.
- Measure the water.
Depth is from mean high water to the bottom at the piling. Your survey or builder can give it.
- Enter the distance and the height.
Distance from the seawall face to the piling center, and how high you plan the top above mean high water.
- Add the cap height, if there is a seawall.
Optional. It lets the tool check the 10 ft above the cap rule.
- Read each row.
The first rows are minimums to ask about. Over rows are a question for your builder before you sign.
The written rules this uses
| Item | Rule | Code section |
|---|---|---|
| Driven depth, within 6 ft of the seawall face | 4 ft minimum | 5.4.10.N |
| Driven depth, more than 6 ft from the face | 6 ft minimum | 5.4.10.N |
| Driven depth, freestanding mooring post or other piling | 8 ft minimum | 5.4.10.N |
| Piling top, with a seawall | 10 ft above the cap, at most | 5.4.10.G |
| Piling top, no seawall | 13 ft above mean water level, at most | 5.4.10.G |
| Mooring pile top (quays and mooring piles) | 8 ft above mean high water, at most | 5.4.5.C |
| Cross-bracing | every two closest pilings where water is over 8 ft, 30 to 45 degrees from vertical, at least 2 x 6 in | 5.4.10.Q |
Questions to ask your dock builder
- How long is each piling, and how far is it driven? Get both on the quote. The code minimum is 4, 6 or 8 ft depending on where it stands.
- What if the piling cannot be driven that deep? The code then requires cross-bracing or tie-backs. Ask how the builder will show that on the drawing.
- How high will the tops stand? Ask for the height above the seawall cap and above mean high water, in feet, on the plan.
- Where is the cross-bracing? If the water is over 8 ft deep, it goes on every two closest pilings.
- How do I choose a builder? See choosing a seawall contractor.
Where the code text leaves room
Two readings of the height limit. Section 5.4.10.G limits pilings to 10 ft above the seawall cap. Section 5.4.5.C, which sits under quays and mooring piles, says pilings may not be higher than 8 ft above mean high water. A cap is usually a few feet above mean high water, so a tall dock piling can pass one and fail the other. We show both rows. Read three ways: within both, over the 8 ft rule only (allowed if only 5.4.10.G governs dock pilings), or over both. The permit office decides which applies. Where two city rules conflict the code says the most restrictive applies (5.4.10.T).
Our planning assumption. The 2 ft added to the high end is for trimming the top to level and is not in the code. The code gives a driven depth and a height but no length.
What the numbers do not cover
Passing these checks does not mean a permit. Piling material, spacing, fasteners, side offsets and the boat lift certification are separate rules, and the permit reviewer decides. The permit steps are in the dock and boat lift permit checklist. Water depth also moves with the tide; see the dock tide clearance calculator.
Next step: get a written quote
This tool checks numbers, not the job. We are a referral service, not a contractor; we connect visitors with independent local providers. Use the form below to ask independent local seawall and dock contractors for a written quote, and ask each to list the piling length, the driven depth and the top height on the quote.

Numbers are the limits written in the city code, applied to the figures you enter. The city can amend its code, and the permit reviewer decides. This tool is not a permit determination, legal advice or an engineering review.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a dock piling have to be in Cape Coral?
The Land Development Code does not give a piling length. It sets how deep a piling is driven (section 5.4.10.N) and how high it may stand (5.4.10.G and 5.4.5.C). The shortest piling that meets those is the driven depth plus the water depth at mean high water plus the height above the water. Your builder adds extra for trimming.
How deep must a dock piling be driven?
Section 5.4.10.N says pilings within 6 ft of the seawall face are driven at least 4 ft into the submerged bottom, and pilings more than 6 ft from the face at least 6 ft. Freestanding mooring posts or other freestanding pilings are driven at least 8 ft. If a piling cannot reach the depth, cross-bracing or tie-backs are required.
How high can the top of a dock piling be?
Section 5.4.10.G caps pilings at 10 ft above the seawall cap, or 13 ft above mean water level if there is no seawall. Section 5.4.5.C, under quays and mooring piles, says pilings may not be higher than 8 ft above mean high water. The text does not say whether 5.4.5.C also covers pilings that hold a dock, so this tool shows both readings.
When does a dock need cross-bracing?
Section 5.4.10.Q requires cross-bracing on every two closest adjacent pilings where the water is more than 8 ft deep from mean high water. The bracing runs 30 to 45 degrees from the vertical and is at least 2 by 6 inches.
Is this the length I should order?
No. It is the shortest length the written minimums allow, plus a 2 ft planning allowance of our own for trimming. Soil, the engineer and the lift maker set the real number, and the building official decides. Ask each contractor to list the piling length and driven depth on the quote.
